[Dr Mike Patrick]
This episode of PediaCast is brought to you by the Magical Moments Foundation.

Hello, everyone, and welcome back to PediaCast. It is a pediatric podcast for moms and dads. This is Dr. Mike coming to you from the campus of Nationwide Children's Hospital. We're in Columbus, Ohio. It's episode 567. We're calling this one Granting Wishes, the Magical Moments Foundation.

I want to welcome all of you to the program. So, you're going to have to bear with me this week. I have a little bit of a cold.

It is not COVID because I had that a few weeks ago, but it is just a little tickle cough and probably allergies are involved as well. And so, I just want to apologize and thank you for your patience up front during the interview today. My responses and questions may be a little shorter than usual.

Otherwise, I break out into a coughing fit and you all know what that's like. So hopefully it'll get better soon. But just bear with me and I want to thank you.

Also, we are back, you may have noticed, after a short break for Labor Day, and I hope all of you had a chance to rest and celebrate your achievements as the summer season winds down and fall officially or unofficially, I should say, gets underway. And I say celebrate your achievements because that is the history of this USA holiday as a nod to the American worker and the role that all of us play in advancing our nation's strength, freedom, and leadership.

That is how the holiday is described, and it has been celebrated in the U.S. since 1882. And if you're interested in learning more about Labor Day, like how it came to be, we will have a link in the show notes called the History of Labor Day from the U.S. Department of Labor. And it's very interesting, especially if like me, you are a history buff.

I mean, these kinds of things, like we just take it for granted. Like, okay, the first Monday in September is always Labor Day. Well, how did that start?

Why did it start? Who got it going? Who was behind it?

And I think it's not only interesting from a history standpoint, but it just shows that if you have a passion for something and you can make a difference that lasts for generations, perhaps, just as the U.S. Department of Labor did, although those were people in the U.S. Department of Labor who started Labor Day. So anyway, if you're a history buff, definitely head over to the show notes and look for that link. So, what are we talking about today from a pediatric standpoint?

Well, today, the Magical Moments Foundation is on our radar. It is a wish-granting organization that supports children and families impacted by facial differences. And these differences can result from genetic conditions, birth defects, trauma, disease, injuries.

And they can have a devastating effect on self-esteem and the pursuit of dreams, which is where Magical Moments steps in to grant wishes and send the message that those with facial differences are seen and cared for and encouraged to pursue their dreams, no matter how small or big. To help us explore this organization, we have the two co-founders with us today, Dr. Richard Kirshner. He is the Magical Moments Foundation co-founder and president, also chief of plastic and reconstructive surgery at Nationwide Children's Hospital.

And Krista Schrader is co-founder and executive director of the Magical Moments Foundation. Before we get to them, I do want to remind you the information presented in PediaCast is for general educational purposes only. We do not diagnose medical conditions or formulate treatment plans for specific individuals.

If you're concerned about your child's health, be sure to call your health care provider. Also, your use of this audio program is subject to the PediaCast Terms of Use Agreement, which you can find at pediacast.org. So, let's take a quick break.

We'll get our guests settled into the studio, and then we'll be back to talk about granting wishes and the Magical Moments Foundation. It's coming up right after this.

[Dr Mike Patrick]
Dr. Richard Kirshner is chief of plastic and reconstructive surgery at Nationwide Children's Hospital and co-founder and president of the Magical Moments Foundation. Krista Schrader is also co-founder and executive director of Magical Moments. So, what does this organization do? What is their mission?

Who do they serve? And how can children, families, doctors, and communities get connected with their work? We'll have answers to these questions and more, but first let's give a warm PediaCast welcome to our guests, Dr. Richard Kirshner and Krista Schrader. Thank you both so much for visiting with us today.

[Dr Richard Kirschner]
Thanks, Mike. Thanks so much for the opportunity to come speak with you and all of your listeners today about Magical Moments and to share some of our really wonderful stories.

[Krista Schrader]
Yes. Thank you, Mike. This is wonderful, and we're just really excited to be here.

[Dr Mike Patrick]
And we are really happy to have you guys. I'm excited to explore Magical Moments. So, Dr. Kirshner, let's start with you. What is the mission of Magical Moments? I mean, who does this organization serve?

[Dr Richard Kirschner]
Yes, so Magical Moments Foundation is a really unique children's wish-granting organization that serves children with facial differences. And these are differences that can result from congenital anomalies, genetic disorders, trauma, burns, even cancer treatment. These are kids that face the long-term impact of stigma and emotional scars that can last for years.

So, our mission with Magical Moments is to restore a sense of hope and joy and wonder and empowerment to children with facial differences through magical adventures and experiences. You know, every day of their lives, these kids with facial differences may endure the damaging effects of stigma in the form of teasing, bullying, stares, and social isolation. And they often grow up in a world that tells them that because of their differences, there's things they can never do and things they can never be.

And so, at Magical Moments, we're working to change all that. We're helping kids to understand that they're not at all limited by their differences, but only by the size of their dreams. So, we've really, over the past several years, helped to change the lives of so many children with facial differences by making their biggest wishes come true.

And these are wishes that have connected them with celebrity chefs, Grammy and CMA award-winning artists, Broadway stars, monster truck drivers, professional ballerinas, Olympic and professional athletes, and so much more.

[Dr Mike Patrick]
Yeah, that is really, really cool. When you talk about facial differences, what exactly does that incorporate?

[Dr Richard Kirschner]
Yes. So, the children that we serve are children that are born with facial differences. So, these can be things like cleft lip and palate or other major craniofacial anomalies, children that have facial differences that are associated with genetic disorders like Down syndrome or 22q deletion syndrome, or kids that have suffered the effects of facial trauma, facial burns, or cancer treatment.

[Dr Mike Patrick]
And how did you come up with this idea to have an organization that grants wishes?

[Dr Richard Kirschner]
So, Mike, it's kind of a fun story. So, as you mentioned, I'm a pediatric plastic surgeon, and so I've had a chance to see firsthand throughout my career the really devastating impacts of appearance-related stigma. And although surgery can help to address the physical aspects of facial differences, there's really no operation that I or any other plastic surgeon can do to address the emotional impact of stigma.

So, Magical Moments really got its start in the early part of 2020, probably days before we shut down for the pandemic. And it was really just a kitchen table conversation between me and Krista. And we were talking about the impact of appearance-related stigma and some really sobering statistics that have come out of studies that have been done here in the United States that tell us that somewhere between 50 and 75% of all school-aged children admit to having been teased or bullied at school, and the overwhelming majority of those cases of teasing and bullying are due to appearance.

And we were thinking, now, what about kids that have very significant facial differences due to the disorders that we discussed? And these are the kids that I see every day. And, you know, we thought about it, and there are literally hundreds of wish- granting organizations in the United States that do the really good work of serving kids with life-threatening conditions.

The kids that we see with facial differences are ineligible for wishes from these organizations in many cases. And so, there was nothing to inspire and encourage them. So, we had the concept of developing Magical Moments Foundation to serve these kids.

And within days of this discussion, our basement walls filled up with post-its and discussing everything that we imagined Magical Moments could be. And then the pandemic hit, and Krista was actually furloughed by her job, but that gave her the opportunity to really lay the groundwork for Magical Moments. Well, she was called back to work in the fall, and she very politely declined and resigned.

And she has been the executive director of Magical Moments ever since. In 2020, we granted one wish. That was our first wish.

But since then, we've really, really grown.

[Dr Mike Patrick]
Yeah, that is amazing. It's an amazing story. And you've not only grown, but really in a pretty quick amount of time.

[Dr Richard Kirschner]
Yeah, it's been just four years, and every year we're able to grant more and more wishes to more and more really incredible kids.

[Dr Mike Patrick]
And Krista, how do those wishes impact not only children, but their whole family, really?

[Krista Schrader]
Yeah, you know, it's been really interesting to kind of watch the evolution of Magical Moments Foundation. When we set out to do this, we knew we wanted to impact the kids. We had no idea the amount of impact we would have on not only the families, but the community in itself.

So, everyone who's involved in these Magical Moments, it really does impact them. You know, just for a few examples to showcase the impact, you know, we granted one wish a few years ago, and it was a little boy who had a very significant facial difference. And it was an atypical cleft.

And he was completely blind. He has no eyes. And he loves all things cars.

A 10-year-old little boy loves cars. And he wanted to, quote, see how cars are made. So, we brought him up here, and we, with the help of the Acura NSX plant in Marysville, he got to experience car parts and how to make car parts.

And the entire plant shut down for an hour. They've never done that before in the history of the plant. And all the workers there that day got to experience this Magical Moment firsthand.

I was there that day. One of the workers, one of the older gentlemen who was there, he came up to me and he said, you know, Krista, I've been working here for 30 years. He goes, I have 13 grandkids that come and visit often.

He said today was my favorite visit. And just hearing that feedback, it really let us know that we're impacting more than just the children and the families. So, it's been fantastic to watch the evolution of Magical Moments.

[Dr Mike Patrick]
Yeah, that is really something. And when I was thinking about this, you know, I thought these wish grants not only really impact the kids, but the whole family. But in this case, it was a whole factory.

[Krista Schrader]
It's been incredible. And it's impacted both Richard and me in ways that we never really thought possible either. To get to know these families and their stories and to be able to be advocates for them is everything.

And through this, we have made new friendships, and we've connected other families to other families. And, you know, I think for us, one of my favorite things about Magical Moments is maybe not even so much the wish granting itself, but more of the sense of community that it brings. We have local events throughout the community various times of the year.

And for me, it's so rewarding to be able to see a child with a cleft lip and meet another child around the same age with a cleft lip and suddenly there's a sense of community and suddenly they're not alone anymore. And for me, that's been probably the biggest impact, like for me personally, and it's just been amazing.

[Dr Mike Patrick]
That really does sound amazing. Do you have some other examples of specific wishes that Magical Moments has granted?

[Krista Schrader]
Oh, yes. I have a lot of examples of Magical Moments. I mean, you know what's great about this each Magical Moment is really crafted to each child's special story, which allows us the flexibility to really be creative.

One of my favorite Magical Moments was to a young man in New York City. His name is Logan. He, Logan, was born with microphthalmia and he wears prosthetic eyes, and he also has cleft lip and palate, among other challenges.

And, you know, he really loves Andrea Bocelli. That's kind of his go-to inspiration. He has taught himself to play perfect piano and also to sing Italian.

And he has done all this because Andrea Bocelli has inspired him to do so. And this past December, we were able to grant that Magical Moment where Logan got to go to Madison Square Garden and meet Andrea Bocelli backstage and not only meet him, but sing with him. And that was something that I know the family will hold dear in their hearts forever.

And for us, that's such a rewarding Magical Moment because it was one that, again, it was more impactful than you'll ever realize.

[Dr Mike Patrick]
Yeah. Yeah. Did you travel to Madison Square Garden with the family?

[Krista Schrader]
Unfortunately, I did not.

[Dr Mike Patrick]
No, you had other engagements, right?

[Krista Schrader]
You know, it's really hard kind of being a small organization because you have to constantly be doing a lot of things. But we did have our media team go out there and we did capture the Magical Moment on film.

[Dr Mike Patrick]
Yeah, that is really fantastic and something I'm sure that family will remember the rest of their lives for sure. And I am sure you have lots more examples just from your website. I saw one of them that my family would be like, oh, yeah, sign me up.

The cast and crew of Hamilton on Broadway. That's really something.

[Krista Schrader]
That was a great Magical Moment. They're all great. That's the great thing about Magical Moments is, again, we get to be creative in what we create for these kids and make experiences.

That one specifically was a great one. So, it's a great family from North Carolina. Little boy, his name's Gavin.

He's amazing. Amazing. And he aspires to be a Broadway musical star.

And this kid is going to do that. I mean, he's incredible. And anyway, we were able to get him backstage at the Broadway show.

We got to meet all the actors and actresses, and he got to really have a sneak peek of what it would be like on Broadway. And I know that even just being in New York City was a treat for him. So, to watch him come alive on stage and to see the videos and the photos of him was life changing.

[Dr Mike Patrick]
Yeah. Yeah. A local celebrity, Cameron Mitchell, the restaurateur, someone wanted to meet him.

[Krista Schrader]
Yeah. So that was Cassidy, a little girl from Youngstown, Ohio. Cassidy's Magical Moment was she wants to own her own restaurant someday.

And so, we brought Cassidy, and she wanted also to meet Billy Eilish. So, we brought her down to Columbus and with the help of Cameron Mitchell and the Columbus community, we were able to make that Magical Moment happen. And let me tell you, that was a weekend long event, and it was fantastic.

Meeting Cameron was just kind of an experience in itself. Of course, we got into his office and the first thing he handed us was chocolate milkshakes. And then we all did a cheer to it.

And that was really special. And Cassidy loved it. You know, everything from the AC Marriott check-in to the Cameron Mitchell provided dinner at the end of the weekend.

It was great. We actually had a special dinner arranged for Cassidy at Cap City Diner in Dublin, and we then surprised her and her family with a personalized video message from Billy Eilish. This was 2020, so this was during COVID.

So, meet and greets were out of the question, but Billy just loved Cassidy's story and wanted to send something personalized to her. So, watching Cassidy's face lined up was, again, transformational. Like, how do you put into words what that did for her that day?

I don't have words for it.

[Dr Mike Patrick]
Yeah, and not only in the experience, but also the boosted confidence that look what can happen if people put their minds to it, regardless of who you are and what it is that you're excited about.

[Krista Schrader]
Yeah, there's a lot of great stories like that. There's watching the fallout from the magical moment and the follow-up, I should say, has been, I think, the biggest thing for us. And really, so let me take you through the nomination process briefly to kind of tell you what we look for when we grant a magical moment.

So, on our website, you can nominate a child and it's free to do. It's easy. We ask a few simple questions.

We say, you know, tell us the child's special story. This is where the parents or neighbors or healthcare provider can get as detailed as they want to. What's the wish for a magical moment?

What are we looking to do? And then three is the most important thing for us. And that's what is the impact of this magical moment on this child?

And that's where we really, really decide if we're going to grant the magical moment. And for us, it's all about making the biggest impact in these child's lives, these children's lives. So, I think it's, I think it's just really special.

Richard. I mean, feel free to jump in if I'm missing.

[Dr Richard Kirschner]
Yeah, I would just, I'd love to tell Rachel's story. So, one of my favorite Magical Moments because it really illustrates the impact of a wish. So, there was a high school student with an adopted child with significant facial difference who had suffered a significant amount of stigma as she grew up and innumerable surgical procedures and her inspiration is Golden State Warriors point guard, Steph Curry.

And the reason for that is she says, well, even though Steph is not one of the tallest point guards in the league, it doesn't stop him from being the best. And so, she takes her inspiration from that. So, Rachel's wish was to meet Steph Curry and watch him play.

And then she threw us a little bit of a curveball. She said, if I do get to go to the game, I'd like to travel to the game in a yellow Lamborghini. So, this wish did in fact happen in San Francisco and Rachel did get to meet Steph Curry and speak with him and watch him play.

And yes, she did in fact get to go to the game in a yellow Lamborghini. In fact, it was amazing because the car was decaled with her name. It said Rachel's Magical Moment and she really arrived at the game in style and the impact on the family was immediate and very apparent.

But one of the best moments I think for me and Krista in the history of Magical Moments was a day many weeks later when Rachel's mom sent us a photograph and it was a photograph of Rachel in her high school basketball uniform and mom said, you know, Rachel never would have tried out for the high school basketball team for fear of being rejected and inspired by her magical moment and the time that she spent with Steph Curry.

She was inspired to come home and try out for the team, and she made the team. So, we hear stories like this all the time about what happens after a magical moment in the child's life. Yes.

[Dr Mike Patrick]
Yes. Now I would imagine that a couple of a couples of things that are important for an organization like this is one awareness that it exists because there's a lot of folks out there who could benefit who may never hear about it or come into contact with you guys. And obviously doing a podcast like this is one way to get the word out, but I'm sure you guys have other ways that you let folks know about this.

And one of those is something called Lights, Camera, Magic. Can you tell us a little more about that?

[Dr Richard Kirschner]
Yeah. So, Lights, Camera, Magic is one of our favorite events. And as Krista said, in addition to granting wishes, we really, really do work to change the world in which our kids grow up, right?

And to increase awareness and acceptance of facial differences throughout the community and really to create a world of greater kindness and understanding. So, Lights, Camera, Magic is really an event that's just designed to let kids be kids, but to give them a big jolt of self-confidence and to showcase to the community the beauty of all children. So what Lights, Camera, Magic is, it's essentially a full-on runway show.

It's a runway fashion show and it's complete with all the sights and sounds that you would expect to see at a fashion show in New York City or Milan. And it gives some really, really amazing children, both kids with and without facial differences, a chance to be models, right? To come and select their fashions and to have their hair and makeup done professionally, and then to just strut their stuff on the runway.

And we just had a couple of weeks ago, the 2024 edition of Lights, Camera, Magic, and it was really amazing to watch as the kids sort of arrived and entered the dressing room a little bit shy and a little bit fearful and a little bit unsure, you know, because these are kids, you know, kids with facial differences aren't often asked to do things like photo shoots and runway shows, but they ended up absolutely beaming with joy and confidence as they walked down the runway and they all kind of got to the end of the runway and did their own thing. And you could just see the jolt of confidence that they got at Lights, Camera, Magic, but it was a way for us to inspire and encourage the kids, but at the same time connect with the community, as I said, really showcase the beauty of all children.

[Dr Mike Patrick]
Yeah, that's really something. And we have a link we'll have in the show notes over at pediacast.org called the Magical Moments Foundation. That's the link.

Click on that and you'll be able to find lots more information about Lights, Camera, Magic, and also something called Piles for Smiles. Tell us about that.

[Dr Richard Kirschner]
Yeah, so Piles for Smiles is really a chance for everyone in the community and across the United States to get involved. And so, by hosting a Piles for Smiles yard sale, families have a chance to get rid of some of their unwanted stuff and make a few dollars, but at the same time really help change the world for kids with facial differences. So, anyone who's planning a yard sale or a family yard sale or community yard sale can sign up on our website.

Just click on the Piles for Smiles link and make their sale a Piles for Smiles sale. So, families will pledge to donate some or all the proceeds from their yard sale to Magical Moments, and in turn they'll receive a Piles for Smiles toolkit from us that contains everything they need to host a successful yard sale and to increase awareness and acceptance of facial differences.

[Dr Mike Patrick]
Yeah, that's really amazing. And again, we will have a link over at the show notes, pdacast.org to the Magical Moments Foundation and folks can find out lots more information about Piles for Smiles there. Krista, you guys have student chapters that help to advance the mission of your organization.

Tell us about that.

[Krista Schrader]
Yeah, so the student chapters are just amazing. So, starting with the chapter at UNC, Magical Moments Foundation now has over 25 student chapters at colleges and universities all across the U.S. Chapters offer students an opportunity to get involved while hosting their own awareness and fundraising event. And we have our director of student chapters, Catherine Bingham.

She's a UNC dental student. She has single-handedly organized every single student chapter. She's incredible and she's really our biggest asset at Magical Moments.

And I think it's incredible what they're doing. They're boots on the ground, grassroots fundraising events, awareness events. Some student chapters have even granted their own Magical Moments to their own craniofacial center kids, patients.

And it's fun to watch. It's fun to watch these groups get creative and really support the organization as a whole.

[Dr Mike Patrick]
Yeah. And again, I think you guys downplay it a little bit, but I think that 25 student chapters in four years is just incredible, you know, in terms of just reaching out and kind of spreading out across the United States and raising awareness and getting folks involved. I'm sure we have some listeners here that maybe in your local community, if you have a university, maybe you attend a university or your faculty or staff there that does not have an established chapter.

How can interested students, staff, faculty establish a chapter at their university?

[Krista Schrader]
Yep. So, the first place to start, if somebody would like to start their own Magical Moments Foundation student chapter, be to reach out to us on our contact us page, that email will come directly to me. I will then coordinate a separate email with Catherine Bingham and then she will walk you through every single thing that needs to be done in order to create the student chapter at your university.

[Dr Mike Patrick]
Great. And again, they can just go to that Magical Moments Foundation webpage and click on contact if they are interested. And again, we'll have that link in the show notes for everybody.

And then you have an annual gala called A Night of Magic. Richard, tell us about that.

[Dr Richard Kirschner]
Yeah. So, A Night of Magic is our premier annual event, and we hold that early each spring and far from being a standard charity fundraiser, A Night of Magic really lives up to its name in every way. It truly is a night of magic.

Guests have the chance to mingle at our cocktail hour and enjoy some entertainment and then enjoy a wonderful dinner while being entertained with the magic of Master Illusionist Drew Murray, who's done every single one of our events, Night of Magic events. And it's really all done in an atmosphere of magic and whimsy. It's a night where we get the chance to share some really wonderful stories of our children's wishes and our guests actually get to witness Magical Moments granted live on stage, which is really something phenomenal to watch.

There's plenty of kids there at the event as well. Guests of A Night of Magic, they even have the opportunity to bid on adventures of their own at our silent auction and have a chance to win their own magical moment at our now somewhat famous magical wishing well that is at the event every year. It's always a night of a lot of fun.

It's very enchanting and it's one in which it's really just incredible to see the whole community come together to help make some really big dreams come true for some really, really special kids. Our next Night of Magic will be here in Columbus at the Columbus Atheneum on the evening of March the 8th.

[Dr Mike Patrick]
March 8th. And I'm sure you guys will have more information, especially as the date approaches over at Magical Moments Foundation at the website.

[Dr Richard Kirschner]
Absolutely.

[Dr Mike Patrick]
Yeah, and you said March 8th. So next spring is the next one. And then Krista, how can families and businesses get involved with Magical Moments?

You know, we mentioned some of the ways that you guys do raise awareness and have some fundraising. Are there other ways that folks can get involved?

[Krista Schrader]
Yep. So, there are several ways to get involved with Magical Moments. The first would be to make a gift or sponsor a wish in someone's honor or memory.

Another one would be to join one of our committees. We have several committees. And then another one would be attending an event, see what we're all about.

You know, once you attend the event and you see for yourself the kids and you meet the families and you hear our stories, you know, that's such a that's such a great starting point. Another one would be to become an ambassador, and we have our ambassador program online. You can learn more about that and or start a student chapter.

Those are different ways to get involved. And if anybody has any other ideas or would like to learn more about any of those things, they can reach out to me directly. Again, to contact us through the website would be the best way to connect with me directly and I'm happy to help in any way I can.

[Dr Mike Patrick]
Lots of information at the website. Again, we'll have that over in the show notes at pdacast.org for this episode 567 and there's lots of information about your organization. You can even nominate a child. Lots of ways to get involved.

You guys have stories and all your different partners which includes Nationwide Children's Hospital. And of course, that contact page folks are interested in if they have a particular question or want to start a student chapter and those sorts of things. Also in the show notes, we're going to have links to Magical Moments Foundation on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, all the social platforms will have links so folks can connect and engage with you on social media in all those places.

So once again, Dr. Richard Kirshner, co-founder and president of Magical Moments Foundation and chief of plastic and reconstructive surgery at Nationwide Children's Hospital and Krista Schroeder, co-founder and executive director of the Magical Moments Foundation. Thank you both so much for stopping by today.

[Dr Richard Kirschner]
